Presentation of plans for Žito complex revitalization at a press conference

At a press conference at the Radisson Hotel in Ljubljana on October 22nd 2024, Dolinšek Transport d.o.o. and Boscarol d.o.o. presented a project for the revitalisation of the Žito complex in Ljubljana. Some activities are already underway, such as the renovation of a McDonalds, the installation of charging stations for electric cars and a Post Slovenia parcel machine.
The long-term plan envisages the construction of a new business and residential neighbourhood on a nearly 10-hectare site next to Ljubljana’s BTC, where Žito used to have its offices and warehouses.

First, the director of the company, Ivo Boscarol, presented the Žito complex and also emphasized the historical role of silos, which for many decades were an essential part of the food supply, but for the last 17 years, unfortunately, they have been falling into disrepair. His presentation was completed by Jože Mermal, chairman of the BTC management board, who personally followed the entire history of the construction and use of the silos. He welcomed plans to revitalize the area.

The demolition proces was presented by Marko Dolinšek, co-founder and director of Dolinšek d.o.o., which carries out the demolition. The first procedures began already in August, and the entire process is expected to last a year. As explained by Mr. Dolinšek, it is a complex task that will be carried out using the most modern techniques and methods which enable quick, precise and safe removal of objects from the top to the ground, thus causing as little impact on the environment as possible. The waste material will mostly be reused at the Galaksija construction site.

In order for everyone interested to be able to directly observe the process of demolition and construction, they have also established a website www.silosi.net. On the website, they will publish all the current information regarding the demolition, some interesting information about the history of the silos, and visitors will also be able to follow the entire process of demolishing the silos live, via four cameras in the area, as explained by Leo Oblak from the Xpro d.o.o. company.
For this purpose, the company Xpro has developed special cases with cameras that can be moved around the demolition site.

The head of strategic projects at Boscarol d.o.o., M.Sc. Maša Čertalič, explained the details regarding the purpose of the buildings and the complex, as well as the related procedures for the application to change the municipal spatial plan, and emphasized the location near the highway ring.
“We expect that within five years, these spatial plans be accepted and building permits could be issued. We are planning construction in stages, also because we plan to finance most of the investment from our own funds,” she said. She also mentioned the possibility as a short-term goal, to first establish an additional parking lot for the Odiseja facility when it is opened. Long-term plans include the construction of 1,000 apartments, 3,000 parking spaces and 40,000 square meters of business premises, a hotel and areas for leisure, recreation and entertainment. The total gross floor area should amount to 290 thousand square meters, she stated in her presentation.
Next, M.Sc. Damjan Kralj, the chief executive officer of BTC, spoke about the good cooperation with Boscarol d.o.o. and joint opportunities and projects.
